Geraldton

Which way is the wind blowing today??

The lovely harbour of Dongara/Port Denison

Day 64
The wind has died down and it is a beautiful morning. We decide on a bike ride through the town and around the port and perhaps a swim before we head north to Geraldton. We called in to the jetty where the crayfish boats were coming in and were able to buy a couple of crays still kicking for 11 dollars each!! With cooking instructions from the fishermen we took them back to camp in my bike basket hoping they wouldn’t escape before we had them safely in the fridge. Our swim was again lovely and Alan thinks the water is definitely getting warmer the further north we go. We only have about 70km to get to Geraldton and stop at a little Pioneer Heritage settlement of Greenough just south of Geraldton for a look around all the remnants of old buildings of the once thriving turn of the 19th century community followed by lunch of homemade pies!! Will need a big walk after this!! This part of the country is also famous for strong winds as you can see from the strange tree growth.Arrive in Geraldton and decide on a C.P. at Sunset Beach. There is a huge cruise ship anchored off the esplanade, apparently the harbour is not deep enough for the big ships to dock but they ferry the many passengers to the town and on sightseeing trips so must be very good for the city. We are having dinner with Alan’s school friend, Neville and his wife Elaine so we head to the golf club and book in for a game on Sunday and then decide to book a flight to the nearby Abrolhos Islands for tomorrow. Our dinner is lovely at a local restaurant and it was nice to catch up on Al’s friends who we haven’t seen for over12 years. They are heading off tomorrow to help their son and wife, who are having a baby and who work in a very remote aboriginal community in the far north of NT. It is 2 days drive in or out from Katherine and they will be there for 3 months, with no alcohol or petrol allowed!!
