Day 65

It is very windy and we are not sure if the flight will be on but we head out to the airport for our 9am departure. There are 4 other passengers who are going to be staying on one of these islands. There are 3 groups of 40 islands each of varying sizes. The plane is really comfortable and has great views from all seats. For those of you who have flown in little planes with me will know, I am just a little bit...mmmm... terrified of being up in a small aircraft and the wind is still fairly strong so not sure how we will go landing on the tiny little gravel and sand airstrip only 450metres long! The pilot is not fazed at all and does a great job when we overshoot the runway and he controls the little plane into the sandy scrub, he casually says the cross wind was a bit stronger than he thought as I prize my finger nails out of Alan’s arm!! We leave the 4 other passengers, who are families of the lobster fishermen on the most northern Island where they will stay within these little communities of huts and jetty’s for the lobster season which is from March to June each year. On a couple of the other bigger islands they even have primary schools. We then fly to East Wallabi Island for snorkelling and lunch. This airstrip is a bit longer, 600 metres, making me feel much better!! There is only Alan and I so we are well looked after but unfortunately because of the wind the water is not clear and snorkelling is out of the question, so we have to make do with a swim and a nature walk and lunch on the beach. The wind drops for our flight back to Geraldton over the rest of the islands and the pilot gives us a great history lesson on this area and we get some fantastic photos of the reefs and a couple of shipwrecks from as far back as the 1600’s, we even spot a few tiger sharks swimming over the clear white sand between the reefs and which look quite small from the air but wouldn’t like to encounter them close up!! Back at camp we decide to cook up our bargain crayfish for dinner and after watching the beautiful sunset over the Indian Ocean we enjoy our delicious “catch”.
