The infamous Gibb River Road

One of the creek crossings on the Gibb

Bell Gorge

Day 105
Started our 7km walk early to do the Windjana Gorge walk. It was spectacular in parts and the many freshies lying on the banks made the walk even more enjoyable. Got back to camp and packed up, had morning tea and a shower (you don’t miss an opportunity when it’s available out here) and headed off 20km to the Gibb River Road. Not sure what to expect as we have heard lots of reports, but until you get there, its unknown territory. The Gibb river road started out great not too rough and we get to the turn off for Bell Gorge by 11 and drive in the 32km to the Silent Grove campground where we find a nice shady spot and set up camp and have lunch. There are a few other campers there but, a bit like Windjana Gorge campground, well set out and lots of shady trees. We head out to Bells Gorge about 10km away and walk in about 1km to a beautiful waterfall and gorge. There are a few others enjoying a swim so we walk down and enjoy the afternoon swimming and relaxing on the rocks. We leave about 4pm and on the way back we surprise a 9 foot long snake casually slithering across the road........they sure breed them big up here!! A guy driving behind us told us later that it was a harmless children’s python.....not sure which child it belongs to just as long as it doesn’t take a liking to our campsite!!
