Mitchell Falls

Day 109

We leave camp just on dawn about 6am and after 2 hours of very rough road we arrive at Mitchell Falls where there is a camp ground and an office for Helicopter flights over the falls. There are a couple of tour buses and as we start our walk to the falls the helicopters start flying in and out. It’s quite a nice walk of about 1 and half hours and we get to the falls and a crossing of the river above the falls which requires us to take off boots and wade across. Helicopters are flying in and out landing just near the falls and we find out that many passengers are off the cruise boats and bus tours and at a cost of about $100 each way we are not sorry to have done the walk and don’t really think we will have a problem walking the return. The views however would be magnificent though from the air but we get some spectacular photos from a few vantage points around the rim of the gorge. It is a magnificent sight and apparently later in the dry season there may only be a trickle of water as the falls are rain dependent so we feel very fortunate to have seen them in their glory. Our return road trip back to camp seems much rougher than on the way in and our teeth and anything that is not completely tied down rattles as we negotiate the corrugations and rocky track. We are very happy to get back to our lovely camp and enjoy another refreshing swim in our river.
