Tunnel Creek

Day 104

Got an early start and headed for Tunnel Creek National Park about 120 km. It was bitumen for 49km then gravel and dust for the rest the landscape of vast biscuit flat grasslands broken by limestone outcrops and lovely Boab trees. Arrived at Tunnel Creek and took our torches for the 750m walk into the rock tunnel walking in and out of the creek in the 3 to 12metre high cave mostly in darkness in what is an undergrounded passage that has been eroded beneath the limestone range. The 35km drive to Windjana Gorge was made more interesting with the big cattle muster with helicopter and several horsemen herding the hundreds of cattle beside the road. Alan was chomping at the bit to get out and help but we had gorges to see!! Arrived at the camping area and as we were setting up saw friends from Cudgen nearby. Bruce and Linda Peate were packing up to leave and we enjoyed a long chat on where we had all been and recommendations on where we were going as they are travelling in the opposite direction to us. Took a short walk in to the gorge and enjoyed the afternoon sunlight on the limestone cliffs as well as seeing many freshwater crocs on the banks and in the water..........Enjoyed a nice shower at the camp instead of a swim.
